Maszk and Prondzynski Families

The Andrew Maszk and Michael Prondzinski families are related through Catherine Maszk who was Andrew Maszk sister and Michael Prondzinski wife.

The Prondzynski surname probably comes from the village of Prondzonka, which is in Ugoszcz Parish, which is also known as Bernsdorf in German.

ANDRZEJ MASZK

Andreas Maszk was born to Joannes Maszk and Katharina Breza (Brzeska) on November 20, 1839, in Czarndombrow (Czarna Dombrowa), Ugoszcz Parish, Poland. Ugoszcz is just south of Bytów (Bütow) Poland.

The village where Andreas was born is known as Czarndombrow, Zarndamerow, Czarna Dombrowa in Polish and was known as Sonnenwalde in German which translates as beautiful wood.

Andrew’s wife was Ludovika Palubicki, daughter of Josephus Von Palubicki and Marianne Wantoch. Ludowika was born on May 20, 1840. Andres and Ludwika were married on February 07, 1865 in Ugoszcz Parish, Poland.

They emigrated from what was then West Prussia in March of 1868. They landed in Quebec, Canada on May 1, 1868 and came by train to Winona, MN, where several children were born. Andrew’s sister, Katherine was also in Winona with her husband Michael Prondzinski.

79* Maschke, Albert      1866 2    Son         Sammier Prussia
80* Maschke, Veronika          ½    Daughter Sammier Prussia

The ships list shows they were from Sammier which could be Sominy or Sommin in German. The family looks like they lost their first two children between 1868 and 1870 when they appeared on the census in the city of Winona, Minnesota.

In 1879, Andrew Maszk filed a claim on land in Pulaski Township and in 1880 came by train with his family and all his worldly goods to Grand Forks, North Dakota. From Grand Forks they traveled by wagon to settle on their claim.

Descendants of Albert Teske

Albert Teske was born in July of 1832 in Prussian Poland. Albert was married two or three times and married his first wife some time before 1863 in Poland. The date is based on the birth of his oldest daughter Otelia. The information we have to go on for Albert’s life is sketchy, and is mainly based on his daughter’s lives.

Albert's family originated from Baden-Baden, Germany. Albert supposedly studied for the ministry at Heidelberg, Germany but ended up in the military serving in the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). August Byzewski and Jacob Czapiewski also served in that war.

After the war Albert lived in Poland or at that time West Prussia. Based on his last will and testament, Albert still owned land in Poland when he died.

Adelaide Teske and Otelia Teske were sisters and born to Albert Teske and one of his three wives.

Children of Albert Teske and Unknown wife are:
1. Otelia Teszke, was born between September 1864 - 1865 in Brusy Parish, Poland. She married Leon Trzebiatowski October 09, 1885 in Czapiewicz, Brusy Parish, Poland; Leon was born August 19, 1860 in Borzyszkowy, Poland; died October 18, 1954 in Warsaw, Walsh, North Dakota, USA. Otelia died June 06, 1945 in Warsaw, Walsh, North Dakota. Leon and Otelia immigrated: 1888 from Poland.

2. Adelaide (Delia) Teske, born December 16, 1874 in Poland; died December 05, 1948 in Stustman County, ND. She married (1) Tibatowski sometime before 1896. She married (2) Adalbert 'George' Wosick 1906 in Walsh County, ND; born April 23, 1849 in Poznan, Poland; died June 08, 1922.

Otelia Teske and Leon Trzebiatowski were married in Czapiewicz, Brusy Parish, Poland, and Leon was born in Borzyszkowy Parish, Poland. So it would be a good guess that Albert Teske was from one of these two Parishes. I have found the following marriage records which may be Albert.

Parish / Registry office Year Groom Surname Bride Surname
Brusy                              1873 Albert Teszke        Rozalia Piekarska
Leśno                              1880 Albert Teske         Theophila Beger

Albert then married (2) Julia A. Janikowski in 1883 in Poland. Julianna was a widower herself and was born May 06, 1863 in Germany (Poland), and died November 10, 1941 in Grand Forks, North Dakota. On the 1900 Census a stepson Joseph is listed under the name Sominski, living with Albert and Julia, so I believe this is from Julia’s first marriage. Joseph Sominski later moved to Montana which was the next stop for many Kaszubian Poles who wanted to farm in the 1910-1920 timeframe. Below is the possible marriage record also from Brusy Parish, Poland.

Parish / Registry office Year Groom Surname Bride Surname
Brusy                              1881  Jan Sumiński        Julianna Janikowska

Albert and Julia immigrated to the United States in about 1892; Otelia had come earlier in 1888 with her husband and family.

Albert came late to Walsh County, but there was also an Elias and Stuart Tesky who were in Walsh County early based on land records and Naturalization records. Albert may have lived in South Dakota based one child’s birth information.

TESKEY ELIAS    09/02/1882
TESKY STUART  05/15/1883

Albert lived in Roseau County, MN in 1900 and 1910.

TESKE ALBERT age 76 M W GERM MN ROSEAU DEWEY TWP 1910

Albert died in 1919 and is buried in St. Stanislaus Catholic Church, Warsaw ND

There were other Teske families living in Winona. Carl Teske who immigrated in 1881 and Charles Teske who immigrated 1877.

Children of Albert Teske and Julia Janikowski are:
  1. Norbert Teske, born June 1886.
  2. Louis Teske, born June 1889.
  3. Alois Teske, born June 19, 1889 in Poland; died March 26, 1975 in Becker County, MN.

Ugoszcz Parish, Poland (Bernsdorf, West Prussia)

From Ugoszcz Parish, were a group of related families who came to North America on the Leibig on 1 May, 1868. The passenger list includes people who departed from Hamburg, Germany and arrived to Quebec, Canada on the vessel Leibig, Captained by Bornholdt. Many of these people settled in Winona, Minnesota and their descendents settled in Walsh County North Dakota. This was information originally published in the Bismarck-Mandan Genealogical Society newsletter in 1976, Pages 8 thru 24 and was contributed by Robert Gruchalla of Minto, North Dakota.

Some of the families included Peter Zwicki, Jacob Lipinski, John Czapiewski, and Stanislaus Werra, who settled in Winona, Minnesota. Andreas Maschke who moved from Winona, Minnesota to Walsh County, North Dakota and Valentine Eichman, who settled Pine Creek, Wisconsin.

Ugoszcz Parish is in the modern day Powiat (District or County) of Bytowski and was made up of the Studzienice (Community or Borough) Gminy.
