JOSEPH FELTMAN

Joseph Feltman was born in Poland on January, 14, 1857 in Poland. Joseph immigrated to the U S. at the age of 18 in about 1875 and settled in Perham, MN.

There is a Joseph Feldman age 17 who arrived September 17, 1873 in the port of New York, he came from Germany and is listed as a painter. It is not known if he was traveling alone or with friends or family the family listed previously was that of Wieland.

Joseph worked on a railroad for four years and then he came to North Dakota in 1878 where he filed homestead in Pulaski Township.

He returned to Perham, MN, and married Eleanor Czapiewski on May 5, 1879 and on their honeymoon came back to North Dakota bringing with them their total belongings: two oxen, one cow, a cat and their clothing.

Eleanor Czapiewski was the daughter of Anton Czapiewski and Maryanna Plata and according to the ships manifest when her family came she was born 1865 in Prussia. I didn’t locate the birth record of Eleanor, but most of her siblings were born in Ossowo, Wiele Parish, Poland.

Joseph and Eleanor were on the 1880 census living next to Eleanor’s parents.

Joseph filed land claims in 1888 and there was also a Henrik Feldman who filed earlier in 1882 and 1883 and was living in Pembina in 1880.

Other possible spellings are FELDMAN, FELDMANN, FELTDMAN, FELTMAN

There are possible parents of Joseph who were living in Perham in 1880. Andrew and Catherine Feltman came to the United States with the Frank Bucholz Sr. family from Krakow, Poland.

The Feldman’s had two children, a daughter Mary and a son Joseph. Mary was born in Krakow, Poland, in 1850. She married Frank Walkowski in the year of 1867 at the age of 17.

The Feltmans settled on the east side of Gorman Township by the Gorman-Corliss border, on a homestead along the Toad River, near the Frank Walkowski homestead.

Their son Joseph was never married. He moved to Minto, North Dakota to work in the harvest fields. He moved in the fall of the year and built a sod house to live in until he was settled. He is buried in North Dakota. Other Feltmans also moved to North Dakota to work in the fields.

ALBERT 'WOJCIECH' BABINSKI

Albert Babinski was born in December of 1844 or 1845 in West Prussia. On his marriage record from Wiele Parish he is listed as living in Long, West Prussia which is now Lag, Poland. Albert’s baptisimal record may be possibly found in Czersk Parish.

Adalbert Babinski age 23 and Franziska Osowska age 19 were married February 4, 1867 in Wiele Parish, West Prussia, the witnesses were possibly Franz Glinowski and Carl Wilkowski depending on the reading of the record.

Francisca Ossowska was the daughter of Paul Ossowski and Anna Grebin and was born August 31, 1848 in the Village of Ossowo, Wiele Parish, West Prussia and her God Parents were Joseph Ossowski and Francisca Narloch.

Albert and Francisca had their first child born in Lag, Czersk Parish, Poland in 1867.

Albert Babinski and Frances Osowski came to America between 1867 and 1871 with their son John, age 2. They came by sailboat which took almost two weeks. Soon after they arrived, their son Albert was born in New York.

According to family history Albert Jr. was born in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York which may be correct, but we find Albert on the 1870 Census in Saratoga County, New York working as a farm laborer. The census record was taken June 22, 1870.

Albert may have come earlier to America because about a month after the census record Frances and John arrived from Prussian Poland on the ship Hershel.

Other families on the ship were Lewinski and Prondzinski, which maybe from the same area of Poland.

Albert Babinski and his wife, Frances (Osowski) moved to Winona, MN sometime after 1871, where they lived for several years between 1874 and 1878. The family should be on 1875 census in Winona, Minnesota, where Theodore, Rosa, and Andrew were born.

There were unclaimed letters for Albert in Winona in 1875 according to the Winona papers online.

When Albert came to the Dakota Territory they came by freight car to Grand Forks, where they came to filed homestead claims in Pulaski Township, which was then still part of Grand Forks County.

Albert with several others filed on claims in Pulaski Township in 1879. After two years of preparations the family traveled in box cars with their belongings to Grand Forks and from there the 30 miles north by wagon to their claims.

There was an August Babinski living in Trempleau County, Wisconsin born in 1855, was was possibly born to August Babinski and Josephine Pruska in Lag, but it is unknown if he is related to Albert.

Albert and Frances were on the 1880 Census Township 155, Walshville, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory

The family built a log home with a sod roof, cutting down trees and laying logs with a mud mixture. For a white or lighter exterior they mixed ashes and water, and then painted over the mud. The interior was small with straw mattresses for beds. Field work was done with oxen.
