JOSEPH FELTMAN

Joseph Feltman was born in Poland on January, 14, 1857 in Poland. Joseph immigrated to the U S. at the age of 18 in about 1875 and settled in Perham, MN.

There is a Joseph Feldman age 17 who arrived September 17, 1873 in the port of New York, he came from Germany and is listed as a painter. It is not known if he was traveling alone or with friends or family the family listed previously was that of Wieland.

Joseph worked on a railroad for four years and then he came to North Dakota in 1878 where he filed homestead in Pulaski Township.

He returned to Perham, MN, and married Eleanor Czapiewski on May 5, 1879 and on their honeymoon came back to North Dakota bringing with them their total belongings: two oxen, one cow, a cat and their clothing.

Eleanor Czapiewski was the daughter of Anton Czapiewski and Maryanna Plata and according to the ships manifest when her family came she was born 1865 in Prussia. I didn’t locate the birth record of Eleanor, but most of her siblings were born in Ossowo, Wiele Parish, Poland.

Joseph and Eleanor were on the 1880 census living next to Eleanor’s parents.

Joseph filed land claims in 1888 and there was also a Henrik Feldman who filed earlier in 1882 and 1883 and was living in Pembina in 1880.

FELDMANN HENRIK 607 01/20/1882
FELDMANN HENRIK 2111 07/10/1883

Other possible spellings are FELDMAN, FELDMANN, FELTDMAN, FELTMAN

There are possible parents of Joseph who were living in Perham in 1880. Andrew and Catherine Feltman came to the United States with the Frank Bucholz Sr. family from Krakow, Poland.

The Feldman’s had two children, a daughter Mary and a son Joseph. Mary was born in Krakow, Poland, in 1850. She married Frank Walkowski in the year of 1867 at the age of 17.

The Feltmans settled on the east side of Gorman Township by the Gorman-Corliss border, on a homestead along the Toad River, near the Frank Walkowski homestead.

Their son Joseph was never married. He moved to Minto, North Dakota to work in the harvest fields. He moved in the fall of the year and built a sod house to live in until he was settled. He is buried in North Dakota. Other Feltmans also moved to North Dakota to work in the fields.

From East Otter Tail County History Volume II 1994

Joseph Feltman died March 27, 1947 in Walsh County, North Dakota. Eleanor died March 12, 1963 in Walsh County, North Dakota.

The Feltmans were active in the Catholic Church. They raised a family of 6 sons and 4 daughters: Elizabeth, Emma, Veronica, Alexander, Joseph, Dominick, Izydore, William, Konstanty, and Angela.

ALBERT 'WOJCIECH' BABINSKI

Albert Babinski was born in December of 1844 or 1845 in West Prussia. On his marriage record from Wiele Parish he is listed as living in Long, West Prussia which is now Lag, Poland. Albert’s baptisimal record may be possibly found in Czersk Parish.

Adalbert Babinski age 23 and Franziska Osowska age 19 were married February 4, 1867 in Wiele Parish, West Prussia, the witnesses were possibly Franz Glinowski and Carl Wilkowski depending on the reading of the record.

Francisca Ossowska was the daughter of Paul Ossowski and Anna Grebin and was born August 31, 1848 in the Village of Ossowo, Wiele Parish, West Prussia and her God Parents were Joseph Ossowski and Francisca Narloch.

Albert and Francisca had their first child born in Lag, Czersk Parish, Poland in 1867.

Albert Babinski and Frances Osowski came to America between 1867 and 1871 with their son John, age 2. They came by sailboat which took almost two weeks. Soon after they arrived, their son Albert was born in New York.

According to family history Albert Jr. was born in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York which may be correct, but we find Albert on the 1870 Census in Saratoga County, New York working as a farm laborer. The census record was taken June 22, 1870.

BOBINSKEY ALBERT | age 23 | POLAND | NY | SARATOGA | SARATOGA SPRINGS | 1870

Albert may have come earlier to America because about a month after the census record Frances and John arrived from Prussian Poland on the ship Hershel.

Franziska Babinsky Woman              22 1848 F 18 Jul 1870 Germany Herschel

Johann Babinsky     Child, Youngster 2 1868 M 18 Jul 1870 Germany Herschel

Other families on the ship were Lewinski and Prondzinski, which maybe from the same area of Poland.

Albert Babinski and his wife, Frances (Osowski) moved to Winona, MN sometime after 1871, where they lived for several years between 1874 and 1878. The family should be on 1875 census in Winona, Minnesota, where Theodore, Rosa, and Andrew were born.

There were unclaimed letters for Albert in Winona in 1875 according to the Winona papers online.

When Albert came to the Dakota Territory they came by freight car to Grand Forks, where they came to filed homestead claims in Pulaski Township, which was then still part of Grand Forks County.

Albert with several others filed on claims in Pulaski Township in 1879. After two years of preparations the family traveled in box cars with their belongings to Grand Forks and from there the 30 miles north by wagon to their claims.

There was an August Babinski living in Trempleau County, Wisconsin born in 1855, was was possibly born to August Babinski and Josephine Pruska in Lag, but it is unknown if he is related to Albert.

Albert and Frances were on the 1880 Census Township 155, Walshville, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory

The family built a log home with a sod roof, cutting down trees and laying logs with a mud mixture. For a white or lighter exterior they mixed ashes and water, and then painted over the mud. The interior was small with straw mattresses for beds. Field work was done with oxen.

Albert and Frances were on the 1885 State Census: Walsh County, North Dakota

SIMON (TANDECKI) TANDESKI FAMILY

Simon Tandeski was born in 1832 in Prussian, Poland. Simon may be the son of Michael Tandeczka and Ewa Wierkus of Borzyszkowy Parish, Poland.

Simon married Magdelina Ossowska on March 24, 1859 in Wiele Parish, Poland.

Both Simon and Magdalena are listed as living in the Village of Ossowo. Magdalena’s last name is incorrectly indexed as Orlowska, but is Ossowska from the source Parish records.

On the marriage record Magdalena is listed as age 25, which wouldmake her born in 1834 and Simon as age 27. On other records Magdalena is shown as born between 1833 - 1837 in , Wiele Parish, Poland.

Refering to the Pomerania birth index
http://www.ptg.gda.pl/index.php/certificate/action/searchM/
Magdalena may be the daughter of Johann and Elizabeth Ossowski, born in Lubichowo Parish which is just east of Wiele.

From census records Simon may have came to America in 1871 or 1872 with 2 boys Frank & Max and 4 girls, although I have only been able to locate 3 girls born in Poland.

Simon is listed in the Winona papers in 1871 as having an unclaimed letter and on his Naturalization records as coming through the port of Baltimore in July of 1869. This means that Simon should be on the 1870 Census.

Simon’s children born in the United State are shown as born in Wisconsin and they were probably living in Trempeauleau or Buffalo County.

Simon may have had a brother Mike who was known in Winona as Mike on the hill(Yellow House) by Pine Creek and or Dodge(three miles from Pine creek) John may be son of Mike which may make Winona relationship to Warsaw Tandeski's.

There was another Tandeski family in Trempealeau, County, WS and Winona, MN whose original spelling was TANDECZKA, this was Casamir ‘Charles’ Tandeczka.

Simon came to the Dakota Territory in 1879 prior to the 1880 census, where he appeared with his wife Magdalena and childern.

Simon was on the 1880 Census Township 155, Walshville, Grand Forks, Dakota Territory

Simon filed for Naturalization to become a citizen of the United States on May, 21, 1880, in Grand Forks, North Dakota. Naturalization was requirement for filing land claims.
Naturalization Information was found in Bismarck, ND. Simon was born in Poland about 1832 Landed in Baltimore July 1869 and renounced Queen of Great Briton and Ireland on May 21, 1880, and signed Simon Tandecki "with excellent penmanship"
After moving to North Dakota and having had two younger girls. One married a Canadian named Francius and the other(Vincentianna) married a Martin Brom and returned to Pine Creek, Wisconsin. One of the girls moved to superior WI.

A Simon Tintecki from Poland is list on the 1885 mortality index as being murdered

http://genealogytrails.com/ndak/walsh/walshmortality.html

This seems be Simon and the story goes that Simon started a freight hauling business and one day he was shot and killed in a robbery while returning home from Minto, ND after selling a load of grain. The team, wagon, and dog returned home with him. Another man of German descent was also shot and killed in the same manner. The elevator man was the suspected killer for a long time as he was the only person knew that Simon had the money. Some 20 years later, a man confessed to a priest on his death bed that he had killed two men under those circumstances. That man was Simon’s hired man.

Simon died Nov, 29, 1884, and was buried in the first Warsaw Cemetery and later moved to the existing one in St Stanislaus Church.

Simon’s family appeared the next year on the 1885 State Census: Walsh County, North Dakota
Paulina (Lena) was on the Census twice the second time living with the Carpenter family.

Magdalena died November 26, 1926 in Walsh County.

Children of Simon Tandeski and Magdelina Ossowski are:

1. Frank Tandeski, born December 28, 1859 in Wiele, Wiele Parish, Poland; died December 19, 1938. He married Josephine Kukowski 1890 in Walsh County, ND M1; born 1866.

MICHAEL STENCEL

Michael Stencel was born between September 29, 1839 - 1844 in Poland, to Jacob and Margaret Stenzel.

According to family history, Michael married Augustine Stubinski. I was able to locate the marriage record of Michael Stenzel and Augustine Styk or Styb, but the handwriting is very bad. The Pommerania Genealogical Association has this index record:

Parish / Registry office Year Picture no. Number Groom Forename Groom Surname Bride Forename Bride Surname
Ugoszcz 1871 0277 13.II Michael Stenzel Augustina Styk

Looking at the actual record they were married in Studnitz on February 13, 1871 in Ugoszcz Parish, Poland. Michael is listed as age 27 (1844) and Augustine as age 18 (1853). According to family history Augustine was born April 10, 1852 in Poland. I found a birth record for Augustina Marianna in Studnitz on April 21, 1851 to Thomas Stuba and Contantia Crysan.

Later in December of 1871 I found the birth record for Marianna born on the 5th to Michael Stenzel and Augustine Styba in Oslawdamerow, Ugoszcz Parish.

Micheal and Augustine immigrated in about 1881 to United States and came to Walsh County, Dakota Territory.

Michael Stencel died February 13, 1913 and was buried in St. Stanislaus Cemetery, Warsaw ND.

JACOB STENCIL FAMILY

Jacob Stencil was born 1825 in Prussian Poland and married Margaret (Stencil).

Jacob immigrated to the United States possibly about 1872 when his daughter Marcia Ann was married in Winona, Minnesota.

There is a Stanislaus Stencil who was in Winona in 1870 and was from Ugoszcz Parish, Poland.

Jacob appears on the 1880 Walsh County Census with his Daughter’s family under the household of Thomas Stanislowski.

Thomas Stanislauski may be related to Anton Stanislauski who were both living in Winona and Anton married Mary Stenzel in December of 1872 in Ugoszcz Parish, Poland. Mary was born January of 1842 in Poland, and immigrated about 1871 and she may be the daughter of Jacob or Stanislaus Stencil.

Stanislaus Stencil B. 1785 – 1802 and Josephine Studzinska B. 1790 – 1805 were from Ugoszcz Parish and may be the parents of Marianna Stenzel and Uncle of Michael who was also married in Ugoszcz Parish.
